PILATES

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is highly recommended by practitioners. It improves strength and flexibility throughout the body and joints; helps to reduce pain; increases range of movement and aids recovery from an injury. The Pilates exercises are meaningful helping towards everyday movement from cleaning the house, work and to complimenting a sport activity.

BENEFITS OF PILATES

Increased core strength, improved posture, decreased back pain, improved energy levels, enhanced body awareness, improved flexibility and mobility, improved balance, improved cognitive functioning, improved motivation, improved sex life, enhanced sport performance, improved sleep. It also prevents injuries, boosts your immunity, strengthens your bones and boosts your mood.

Change happens with movement and movement heals.

Pilates was created in the 1920s by Joseph H Pilates. He believed that everyone should practise Pilates and that one day it would become very popular… he was right.

Joseph Pilates believed that the "modern" life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health. He created a series of exercises, training techniques and equipment to teach his methods.

At the Penn Clinic we offer 1-2-1, 2-2-1 and group sessions. Each class has no more than 8 people, so more individual guidance and support can be given. All mats and equipment are provided.

About Your Instructor

Nicola is a Body Control Pilates Certified teacher. She has been practicing Pilates since it helped resolve her own neck and shoulder pain and swears by it's results.

"Like many others, the ‘covid era’ brought stress, trauma and anxiety; it also offered space and time for reflection. This was when I decided to become a Pilates teacher, to have the opportunity to share the knowledge and benefits of Pilates.

Pilates gave me many personal benefits; I had a desk job for 25 years, which caused neck and shoulder issues that were exacerbated by carrying my baby boys. The pain seemed to take over my days and my mood until 12 years ago when I discovered Pilates through a recommendation by my Osteopath (thanks Mary!).

I have been practising ever since and the benefits have been incredible: it has helped maintain the results of the treatment the Osteopath provided; it helped manage and reduce my pain; it’s made me stronger and more supple. It also helped to release stress, making me more patient and generally a nicer person to be around. I am not cured, there are days I will come into class with a crooked neck, but I always come away feeling better.

Pilates has changed my life for the better and I welcome the opportunity to share that with you. I qualified in 2023 with one of the most amazing and experienced Pilates schools: Body Control Pilates and now I can pass on the knowledge to you."
